The history of Victorinox
In 1884 Karl Elsener opened his knife workshop in Ibach-Schwyz. At that time, Switzerland was still one of the poorer countries in Europe. In the early years of his company, Karl Elsener worked hard to combat poverty and unemployment in his country. He created jobs and thereby helped to stem the flow of emigration.
1891 was an important year in which he first supplied the soldier's knife to the Swiss army. In 1897 he developed the Swiss officer and sports knife, today known as the iconic Swiss Army knife. This laid the foundation for a thriving company that established itself firmly in the world.
From then on, his spirit of solidarity, deep roots in the region and strong commitment to solid values shaped the company philosophy of Victorinox.
